Troubleshooting Your Vehicle’s Failing Driveshaft

Are you having trouble with your failing driveshaft? Many things can cause a failing drive. These items can be the culprit, or it could be something else. Let’s take a look at the most common problems and what the symptoms are for failing driveshaft problems.


The first one is the vibration. Trucks and other heavy machinery tend to generate some pretty nasty vibrations. If you have a vibration problem, you may hear a noise that resembles fingernails hitting a chalkboard. It can also produce a popping sound that makes it feel like your tongue is being torn off. You might also notice sparks and smoke coming from the back of the unit.

This next item is called a failsafe switch. A failsafe switch is installed so that if the power to the device is lost, it will automatically shut off. Because of this, a failsafe switch must be inspected regularly for proper operation. It will need to be replaced if it becomes damaged.

A solenoid is another component that can fail. When a solenoid fails, there will be a sudden drop in power. This can be felt as a clicking sound, where it makes you think that the unit is about to come apart. If you notice this noise, then you should replace the solenoid.

A bad battery is a very common failing item. This can result in the loss of power and the start-up of the vehicle. The best way to solve this problem is to make sure you keep your battery in good shape. Keep it charged and ready for action.

Bad seals can also contribute to a failing motor. This could be due to a loose joint or to a dirt build-up. Either way, it is recommended that you replace the seal. If the problem remains, then your fan motor has failed.

Finally, you should always check the failsafe switch. This is a very important component. It is usually located behind the engine. It has a long wire coming out of it. The switch is designed to stop the motor if anything were to go wrong with the electrical system.

When you are checking these components, make sure you do not start the vehicle. Start the engine and see if it begins to smoke. Then open the hood and check for the area where the failsafe switch is. You could have a serious problem on your hands! Before it comes time to replace the failing unit, make sure you know how to diagnose failing electrical systems.

Look for dimples or other imperfections. These are signs that the cable has failed somewhere. You could also check for any melted wires or insulation. Once you have found a failure, turn off the engine and pull out the bad cable. Make sure you clean it thoroughly.

Reconnect the failsafe switch. Once you have completed this step, remove the faulty cable from the terminal. Make sure you place the new cable on the failsafe switch and plug it in. Check the other motor components to make sure they are also in good working order.

Your motor will most likely be at the level of the pulley. This is something that you need to check for before making any changes. Do not attempt to lower the motor until you have the failsafe switch and the pulley. Take your time, because you do not want any accidents.

There should be an arrow on the failsafe switch that will tell you when the motor needs to be turned off. Sometimes this mechanism will get jammed; in this case, you can push the arrow and it will shut off. Other times it will be a loose piece. If this occurs, replace the failsafe switch.

As a safety precaution, I would also suggest that you use a jack to raise the vehicle. You never know when your vehicle could fall due to vibrations. If you can not put the vehicle up on jack stands, then you need to use your car lift to raise it. If you think you could not make it yourself, call a professional to do it for you.
